Infection Associate with Subclavian Catheters

Abstract
Subclavian catheterization has recentely gained popularity as a convinient method for rapidily establishing venous access for hemodialysis, monitoring central venous pressure and fluid therapy.
Transient or permanent implanted plastic devices are frequently the starting point of nosocomial infections. In particular, intravenous catheters often become infected; the clinical symptoms range from mild local inflammation to lethal
septicemia,
especially in the immunocom-promised hosts. The exact pathogenic mechanisms involved are not yet known and chemotherapeutic treatment of these infections is very difficulty and usually requires removal of the catheters.
The mucoid growth (slim) mediated adhesion of bacteria to solid surface has been investigated, and it seems that this property is of particular importance in the initiation of the infections around prosthetic device.
The present study deals with subclavian catheter related infections associated with slime producing organisms.
